D. José María Marzal
The music band of the Cultural Society La Filarmónica was founded on march 28th 1851 by the illustrious philanthropist José Mª Marzal. It is the senior music band in Extremadura and one of the oldest in Spain.
La Filarmónica is the only civil music band in Spain whose members have the privilege, granted by Queen Isabel II, of wearing military uniform including kepi and dress sword. In addition to this, along its development La Filarmónica has got the next awards and honours:

La Filarmónica has taken part in many institutional acts, as the delivery of the Medal of Extremadura in Mérida (where was conducted by Miguel del Barco, composer of the Anthem of Extremadura), the receptions in honour of Their Majesties the King and the Queen of Spain in Zafra and Badajoz in 1992 or the bicentenary of the foundation of the Castilla 16 Regiment. La Filarmónica has played in both the López de Ayala Theatre of Badajoz and the Grand Theatre of Cáceres and has been present also in the Classic Theatre Festival of Alcántara in 1994.
In 1995 La Filarmónicarecorded its first CD with proper pieces of the repertoire for music bands and the Anthem of Extremadura F.C. with Almendralejo Chorale in 1998. In 2008 presents its CD called BULLS IN OLIVENZA, wich includes some of the most beautiful ever written bullfighting pasodobles including ANTOÑITO FERRERA composed by Antonio Cotolí Ortiz and dedicated to the popular bullfighter from Extremadura.
Its presence is often required in many places of Extremadura and Portuguese towns (some of them such important as Alcaçer do Sal, Silves and Tomar). Worth a mention are also its successful performances in Barberá del Vallés (Barcelona), EXPO 92 and Real Alcázar (Seville), Aracena and Trigueros (Huelva), Érmua (Vizcaya), Parla (Madrid), Algimia de Alfara (Valencia), Cámara de Lobos (Madeira Island - Portugal) and Saturnia and Montemerano (Grosetto - Italia).
Due to the fact of being amateur musicians with other professional careers far from music, members of La Filarmónica have sometimes to refuse to move. In spite of this La Filarmónicahas been invited to play in Barcelona, Vitoria and Irún.
La Filarmónica belongs to the Music Band Federation of Extremadura, and is directly concerned about the development of music in this region.
La Filarmónica is currently conducted by Salvador Rojo Gamón.
